Canadian Senate Resolution, Motion Respecting Human Rights in China and Tibet (1995) [p.341]

THE SENATE OF CANADA

MOTION RESPECTING HUMAN RIGHTS IN CHINA AND TIBET

ADOPTED 15 JUNE 1995

On the Order:

Resuming the debate on the motion of the Honourable Senator Di Nino, seconded by the Honourable Senator Keon:

That the Senate urge the Government of Canada to express concern over continuing reports of violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms in China and particularly Tibet by local, provincial and national authorities and severe restrictions on the rights of citizens to freedom of assembly, association, expression, religion, as well as to due legal process and fair trial;

That the Senate urge the Government of Canada to encourage the People's Republic of China to take further measures to ensure the observance of all human rights including the rights of women and children, and to improve the impartial administration of justice;

That the Senate request the Government of Canada to encourage the government of the People's Republic of China to allow foreign delegations to Tibet to study the human rights situation, the status of religious freedom, and the status of women, the treatment of Tibetan children and prison conditions;

That the Senate urge the Government of Canada to extend support to Tibetan people in their struggle to regain their freedom and the preservtation of their culture;

That the Senate encourage the Government of Canada to support the non-violent efforts of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to resolve the issue of Tibet, particularly the Dalai Lama's campaign to make Tibet a zone of ahimsa (non-violence) through demilitarization and the protection of Tibet's natural environment; and

That the Senate implore the Government of Canada to ask the Chinese authorities to commence negotiations with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and the Tibetan government in exile and representatives of the People's Republic of China on the future of Tibet without preconditions.
